How Culture Creates Better Home Care in Charlotte

Like many in the home care industry, we have deeply personal reasons to care for those who need it most.

We’ve always had a passion for caring for seniors. Mary Ellen in particular grew up in a big family, with relatives who lived well into their nineties. She has many fond memories of hours spent listening to the amazing stories they told as she took care of them.

That’s why we strive to make every day your loved one’s best day. To realize that goal, we work constantly to build a culture of professionalism, compassion and mutual respect.

When we founded Gentle Shepherd Home Care of Charlotte, we knew that, along with providing the best home care in Charlotte, we wanted to provide the best employment in our community as well. And as it turns out, that work matters a lot.

Culture is Important in Home Care

Any business can benefit from a healthy culture that promotes kindness and integrity, but it’s absolutely critical in home care.

That’s because, while technical skills can be taught (and we invest in training our staff), “people skills” like kindness, patience and empathy are instrumental. Assuming a client’s basic needs are met, their quality of life depends largely on how they’re treated day-to-day. By offering them genuine companionship, respect and dignity, our caregivers can fill your loved one’s daily life with joy and meaning.

The formula for good home care has just two ingredients: care plus confidence. Good caregivers need to care about your loved one as a human being, and they need to believe in themselves. Those qualities can’t be taught, but they can be cultivated in a positive environment built around kindness and mutual respect.

We believe in our caregivers, and by doing so, we help them believe in themselves.

We Care for Our Caregivers

We know from personal experience that caregiving is hard work. Nobody can do it alone for long, and nobody should have to. That’s why we maintain a solid team structure to support and encourage.

Caring about our caregivers doesn’t mean we coddle them or lack accountability—much the opposite. It means we hold them responsible. We count on them and we believe in them.

We hold our caregivers to high standards out of respect for their skills, dedication and professionalism. We believe deeply in their competence, determination and integrity. And we make sure they know it.

When you hold your team to higher standards, they rise to meet them. People do better when you treat them like they can do better.

Better Workplace Culture Leads to Better Care

Treating caregivers right leads to better care. It raises their confidence and motivates them to do the best they can every day. It helps them be engaged, present and attentive.

Our workplace culture also helps us retain caregivers far longer than most agencies. Our longest-tenured caregiver was in our second ever orientation group! That means when you work with us, your loved one is more likely to get an experienced caregiver they can keep for a long time.

In fact, many of our caregivers who switch out of the role do so because they’ve been promoted. This gives us a deep bench of office staff who know exactly how to support our caregivers and who can step up to personally handle any emergency.
